Short break disability carers meet with Bulgarian Government
We wanted to share with you an exciting update about what the short breaks team within Fostering People has been up to…
We were recently asked to meet with 8 Bulgarian Government delegates to talk about our short breaks service and to share the positive outcomes that have been achieved by children, young people and their families through accessing our short break service. Bulgaria has really moved forward in terms of services offered to children and families, and has an established foster care system but would now like to further develop their services offered to children with disabilities. We were able to share with them experiences of short break foster care, as well activity clubs, buddying support and domiciliary care. The delegation was very impressed with the outcomes that have been achieved so far and would like for children and families in Bulgaria to have the opportunity to reach the same outcomes.
Three of our short break carers – Kate, Yousaf and Tazeem joined us and were able to give a personal account of short breaks and to share their knowledge and experiences of being involved in such a service.
It was a real privilege to have been invited to meet with the government and it was great to see the enthusiasm of all the delegation to learn and transfer new ways of working in Bulgaria. A really good day had by all!
The Deputy Minister kindly handed us gifts that had been made by children in Bulgaria and presented our short break carers with rose oil as a token of their appreciation.
