What are the different types of placement?

There are a number of different types of foster care placement that Fostering People provide for children and young people of all ages with our foster carers.

Fostering People foster carers are encouraged to be able to take more than one type of fostering placement. All fostering placements are 'matched' to ensure a good fit between the needs of children and young people and the skills and experience of foster carers to meet those needs.

Long term placements

Many Fostering People foster carers provide placements for children or young people or sibling groups on a long term placement basis, usually for the remainder of a child or young person's childhood.

Parent and Child placements

Some Fostering People foster carers can offer placements for a parent or parents with their child/ren.

Bridging placements

A bridging placement generally forms part of a longer-term plan for a child or young person and can sometimes be of two years in duration. In such bridging placements, Fostering People foster carers work with children or young people and their families toward reunification, or prepare children or young people for joining adoptive or long term/permanent fostering families or for moving to semi-independent or an independent living arrangement.

Short term placements

In short term placements, Fostering People foster carers undertake task-centred work with children or young people and their families in situations where the purpose of a placement, and the intended duration, are explicit or can be estimated with relative accuracy.

Sanctuary Seeking Children

Fostering People foster carers can provide placements for children or young people seeking sanctuary from their own country of origin.

Emergency placements

Fostering People provides a 24-hour emergency placement service. Many Fostering People foster carers are able to accept unforeseen, emergency placements for individual children or sibling groups. These give the local authority the opportunity to assess the best future plan for the child whilst you safely look after them.

Respite

Respite usually involves children and young people who are living with foster carers having short stays with another foster family, to give their main carers a break.

Parent and Child placements

Some Fostering People foster carers can offer placements for a parent or parents with their child/ren.

Disabled Children

Within Fostering People, we are also able to offer long term placements and short break schemes for disabled children ensuring that they achieve their full potential and can live ordinary lives.
