Foster Children

According to the Department for Education, there were around 64,400 children living away from home in 2010. Of these, over 47,000 were foster children.

Across the UK, there is a shortage of around 10,000 carers to look after foster children. That’s why Fostering People are looking for as many people as we can to become foster carers.

Why foster children come into care

Foster children can come into care for a number of different reasons. It could be due to a temporary family breakdown or as a result of trauma related to abuse or neglect. The foster children themselves are very rarely associated with why they’ve come into care.

For most foster children, the desired outcome of foster care placements is to reunite them with their birth family or place them back within their own communities. If it’s decided that it’s necessary, some foster children will go on to stay in long term fostering placements, while others might be adopted or encouraged to live independently if they are old enough.

At Fostering People, we aim to support our carers as much as we can to help foster children achieve positive outcomes, regardless of the situation they have come from.
