What Is Fostering?

Fostering is caring for a child in your own home at a time when his or her parents/family are unable to do so. Children and young people can be placed in foster care for many different reasons; it may be that the parents are going through a difficult period or that the child has been abused or neglected. The reason is rarely related to the child and in the end many children will return to their birth families and own communities.

Is Fostering for Me?

Fostering is not a job for the faint hearted. You really need to like children and understand the complex needs and behaviours they can display. You will need stamina, humility, courage, warmth, humour, resilience, patience, forgiveness and open mindedness.

If you need more information or guidance after reading this booklet then do not hesitate to contact us. We will give you an honest picture of the likely challenges in caring for a child who has been through a lot in life. We can also arrange for you to speak to one of our current foster carers.

Things to consider...

  • A spare bedroom for the incoming child will be vital to ensure they will have their own space and privacy
  • You cannot expect to manage a full time job and be a professional foster carer; you simply won't have the time or the energy.
